Why Scent Detection
Dogs experience the world through scent
Scent detection taps into your dog’s natural ability and channels it into a focused activity. Your dog learns to search for, locate and indicate a specific target odour, progressing through increasingly challenging environments and scenarios.
Training is suitable for pet dogs as well as dogs that thrive on having a job. It can be particularly rewarding for:
- Dogs that need more mental stimulation than a normal walk provides

- Anyone looking for something different to do with their dog
All breeds are welcome, and dogs can begin training from 16 weeks old.
A clear path forward
From first scent to real-world searches
Training begins with one-to-one sessions in secure areas. Each stage develops your dog’s ability while helping you become a confident, effective handler.
Stage 1: One-to-one foundations
Your dog is introduced to the target odour, building motivation, search drive and a reliable passive indication.
Stage 2: Indoor searches
Progress to searching rooms, furniture, containers and targets placed at different heights, with an emphasis on clear handler communication.
Stage 3: Outdoor and open areas
Develop independent searching at a distance while introducing wind, environmental distractions and competing scents.
Stage 4: Vehicles and scenarios
Tackle vehicle searches and more complex search-and-locate problems as you and your dog develop as a team.
Once you have reached the required level, you may be invited to join our advanced weekend group to work through more challenging search-and-locate scenarios.

OUR TRAINING APPROACH
A working partnership, not a party trick
Successful scent detection depends on the partnership between dog and handler. We use reward-based training and collaborative problem-solving, drawing on both classical and operant conditioning.
Sessions are designed to develop:
- Motivation and search drive
- Confidence and independence
- Clear communication and effective handling
- A reliable passive indication, or final response
- The ability to search accurately in different environments
The aim is not simply to teach your dog to find an odour. You will also learn how to recognise changes in behaviour, support the search without interfering and work confidently together as a team.
GETTING STARTED
Begin with a suitability assessment
Entry to scent detection training is through a short suitability assessment in our dedicated, fully enclosed scent-training pen.
The assessment looks at your dog’s motivation to locate a toy and their potential to search for a target scent in return for that reward. It takes approximately 20–30 minutes and gives us an opportunity to recommend the right starting point for you and your dog.
