Scent Detection Group
Scent Detection Training (detecting and alerting to target scents/odors) is designed for pet dog owners looking to provide both mental and physical stimulation for themselves and their dogs. This training is both educational and enjoyable. Courses are open to any breed of dog, from small to large, that passes a suitability assessment.
The Scent Detection Group meets on Saturdays from 9.00am to 12:30pm. The program is continuous, with no fixed start or end dates. Clients first undergo a suitability assessment, followed by an initial 6-week course. They then progress through Intermediate and Advanced levels over time. Competitions are held at all levels to add an element of competitive motivation.
- Achievement certificates are awarded at all levels.
- Clients requiring 1-1 training midweek between 10am and 4pm should contact us directly at
- The target scent/odour is 'gun oil'. This is used so that clients may also attend competitions run by other UK scent organisations.
- Practical searches and competitions may include decommissioned, blank firing, firearms or component parts.
Initial Assessment

- Prospective dog and handler teams will display a good standard of control both on and off the lead.
- Recall
- Recall from distractions
- Wait & stay
- Dogs must be social with people and other dogs.
